What happens to fuel (gas/diesel) if it sits for a long time???

Hey guys,

A buddy of mine's uncle has about 2000 gallons of green diesel, but it has been sitting for about 1.5-2 yrs??

Should I add some additives?

Mechanics??

in theory, it might become stagnant in the same way water that just sits without any circulation might. find someone who owns a gas station and ask em.

Diesel is hydroscopic(attracts water). Water is very bad for diesel injection pumps. If the tank that contains the diesel is full to the top I would not worry about it having alot of water. There are de-watering additives you can put in just in case. I would also take the extra step of pre-filtering before pouring it in your fuel tank. Other than that diesel can sit around longer than gas w/o going bad.

I need to do some research, but i think the shelf life of gasoline without a stabalizer additive is about 6-8 months.

And Wiki Answers states:

"Diesel, forever in a sealed container (it is a very light oil) Gasoline, about 6 months Max. in a sealed container, it brakes down over time, creates a type of varnish which is not good for anything."
